Twin Cities to Introduce Pakistan’s First Eco-Friendly Electric Commuter Train

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad and Rawalpindi are on track to witness a green revolution in public transport with the launch of Pakistan’s first eco-friendly electric commuter train. The project, designed to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainable mobility, is expected to transform travel between the twin cities.

CDA and Pakistan Railways to Sign MoU for EV Train Project

A high-level meeting was held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa. During the session, it was announced that CDA and Pakistan Railways will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formally initiate the electric vehicle (EV) train project.

Modern Design and Eco-Friendly Technology

The meeting featured detailed discussions on the train’s layout, business model, and integration of advanced eco-friendly technology. Officials also reviewed findings from a ridership survey, which highlighted strong demand for modern, safe, and sustainable public transport in the region.

Commitment to Environmental Standards

Chairman Randhawa emphasized that the electric train service would comply with all environmental standards, while also incorporating carbon credits to strengthen its sustainability credentials. He further revealed plans to extend the service to other areas of Islamabad by utilizing the existing railway network, thereby broadening the project’s impact.

Feeder Buses for Seamless Connectivity

To ensure last-mile connectivity, the CDA will introduce feeder routes with electric buses linking Margalla Railway Station to different parts of the city. This integration will provide citizens with seamless and affordable transport options.

Affordable, Safe, and Modern Travel for Citizens

“The electric train project will not only modernize Islamabad and Rawalpindi’s transport infrastructure but also ease the burden on road networks while offering citizens a safe, affordable, and eco-friendly travel option,” Randhawa stated.

Officials Express Support for the Project

Senior officials from CDA and Pakistan Railways, including Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza and Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, attended the meeting and expressed their commitment to making the initiative a success.

A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility

The eco-friendly commuter train is expected to set new benchmarks in Pakistan’s sustainable urban mobility, aligning with international standards and best practices while contributing to the overall development of the capital region.
