KARACHI: The Sindh government has rolled out an ambitious initiative called the Workers’ Welfare Card, aimed at uplifting the lives of industrial laborers across the province.
Accident Health Insurance for Workers
According to Secretary Labour, Rafiq Qureshi, the program will provide accident health insurance worth up to Rs. 700,000. Workers will be able to avail treatment at over 270 hospitals nationwide, making Sindh the first province in Pakistan to introduce such comprehensive healthcare coverage for its workforce.
Distribution of E-Motorcycles and Sewing Machines
In addition to healthcare benefits, the government has announced the distribution of 10,000 e-motorcycles. These will be allocated especially to women working in industries and minority laborers. The initiative is expected not only to support workers financially but also to promote eco-friendly transport solutions.
To further empower women, sewing machines will also be handed out under the program, providing an additional source of income and skill development.
Improved Access to Welfare Services
Qureshi highlighted that the Workers’ Welfare Card will simplify access to facilities such as marriage grants and death grants, eliminating the need for workers to wait in long queues.
He also emphasized that exploitation of laborers will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against industries that fail to register their employees. Workers were urged to claim their rights and ensure proper registration under the new welfare system.
A Step Towards Economic Justice
Calling laborers the “backbone of the national economy,” Qureshi said the initiative would open a new chapter of dignity and security for workers in Sindh. He stressed that the flagship program is not only about financial support but also about social protection and environmental sustainability.
