KHANPUR: Authorities have opened the spillways of Khanpur Dam after water levels touched 99 percent of storage capacity. The step was taken to ensure safety and regulate the heavy water flow.
According to officials, the water inflow at Khanpur Dam was 1,204 cusecs. The outflow through spillways was raised to 6,800–7,500 cusecs. The maximum conservation level of the dam is 1,982 feet, which is almost reached due to continuous rainfall.
The district administration has issued safety alerts for residents near the Haro River in Haripur, Hasan Abdal, and Attock. People have been advised to stay away from the river, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow precautionary measures.
Rescue teams and relief workers are on high alert. Officials stated that the opening of spillways is a routine safety measure during high inflows. Citizens have been urged to stay vigilant but remain calm.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also warned of more rainfall in the coming 24 to 48 hours. Heavy rain is expected in Narowal, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Lahore. Southern Punjab and Sindh are also likely to face rainfall under the current weather system.
Sindh’s coastal districts, including Badin, Sujawal, and Tharparkar, could experience heavy showers, NDMA added.
