ISLAMABAD: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has successfully opened 10 million bank accounts for its beneficiaries in an effort to reduce poverty and promote financial inclusion across Pakistan.
Accounts Ready for Activation
Reports confirm that these accounts are currently inactive but will be activated soon once payments are released to beneficiaries. This move is part of the government’s plan to ensure transparency and direct financial access.
Collaboration with Six Banks
At present, six banks are working in partnership with BISP. Efforts are underway to integrate all banks through the One-Link system to make transactions easier and nationwide. The Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan stated that BISP recipients can withdraw funds from any active bank and access standard services, including deposits and remittances.
Withdrawal Charges Apply
Beneficiaries will have to pay withdrawal charges between Rs 100 to Rs 200, depending on the bank and method used. However, the process will exclude agents, ensuring better transparency and reducing misuse.
Focus on Women and Digital Payments
BISP Chairperson highlighted that digital payments remain a challenge, especially for women. To address this, under the Prime Minister’s directive, one crore accounts were opened within four months. The next phase, expected within six months, will focus on expanding digital transactions.
Direct Payments in 2025
Starting in 2025, BISP will directly transfer Rs 13,500 into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. This initiative will remove extra fees or deductions by agents and ensure that deserving families receive full support.
Dynamic Survey for Inclusion
Earlier, BISP launched a dynamic survey to identify and register 10 million needy families across Pakistan. This step is aimed at ensuring that financial aid reaches only the most deserving households through a transparent system.
