The Punjab government has launched its first-ever E-Taxi Scheme under the “Transport Vision 2030.” The program aims to provide eco-friendly transport, reduce fuel expenses, and cut urban air pollution.
Online Applications Open
The online application portal is live at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk. Applicants can submit their forms until October 5, 2025.
Distribution Plan for E-Taxis
In the first phase, 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed. Out of these:
- 1,000 e-taxis are reserved for fleet owners, with a minimum of 10 vehicles per owner.
- 100 e-taxis are allocated for individual drivers linked with Transport Network Companies (TNCs).
- Within this, 70 vehicles are reserved for male drivers and 30 for female drivers.
Benefits of the E-Taxi Scheme
Officials highlight that the scheme will:
- Reduce air pollution in major cities.
- Lower fuel costs for drivers.
- Provide modern travel facilities to commuters.
- Create new job opportunities across Punjab.
Growing Public Response
So far, the portal has received 5,401 registrations and 1,027 applications. Among these, two are from fleet owners and 1,025 from individual drivers.
Government Support and Financing
To support the initiative, the Punjab government has signed a financing arrangement with banks. Key details include:
- Loans of up to Rs. 6.5 million available for buyers.
- The government will cover interest costs on these loans.
- For electric vehicles priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the government will contribute Rs. 585,000 as part of the buyer’s down payment.
Promoting Sustainable Transport
The E-Taxi Scheme reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable transport and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Officials believe it will strengthen urban mobility while encouraging a cleaner and greener Punjab.
