Government Launches Reforms to Boost SMEs in Pakistan
Strengthening SMEDA for Business Growth
ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has announced major reforms to strengthen the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). The plan includes the appointment of a new CEO and the introduction of a restructured framework to accelerate SME growth in the country.
Meeting on SME Development
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, chaired the SMEDA Board meeting on Friday. The meeting was attended by Secretary of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, SMEDA CEO Soqrat Aman Rana, and other senior officials.
Khan welcomed the new board members and emphasized that SMEDA’s reforms align with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for sustainable economic growth.
Focus on Women, Micro-Enterprises, and Climate Action
The prime minister has directed SMEDA to design policies supporting SMEs, women entrepreneurs, micro-enterprises, and climate-friendly businesses. A new outsourcing model will also be introduced to improve efficiency and create innovative programs for small businesses.
Expanding Regional Presence
To enhance accessibility, the government will establish regional SMEDA offices in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan. This step aims to provide greater support to local entrepreneurs and broaden SMEDA’s outreach across Pakistan.
Appointment of New CEO on Merit
During the meeting, it was decided that an HR committee will oversee the recruitment process for the new CEO. The appointment will be made transparently, based strictly on merit, and in line with the prime minister’s vision for institutional reforms.
Khan reaffirmed that there will be no compromise on transparency. He stressed that a strong leadership team is essential for SMEDA’s success.
SMEDA’s Role in Pakistan’s Economic Growth
Khan highlighted that SMEDA plays a vital role in Pakistan’s economic development by supporting small and medium businesses. He noted that the prime minister is personally committed to strengthening SMEDA and ensuring its success.
“SMEDA is central to empowering women entrepreneurs, creating opportunities for micro-enterprises, and boosting SME growth. These initiatives will transform both the economy and society,” Khan stated.
