Submarine Cable Cuts May Disrupt Pakistan Internet Services: PTCL

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced disruption in internet services due to submarine cable damage. The cuts occurred in Saudi waters near Jeddah.

According to PTCL, the issue has affected bandwidth on the SMW4 (South Asia-Middle East-West Asia) and IMEWE (India-Middle East-Western Europe) networks. Internet users in Pakistan may face slow speed and degraded services during peak hours.

The company said its international partners are working on priority to fix the fault. Local PTCL teams are also arranging alternative bandwidth to reduce the impact.

The Ministry of Information Technology has not released any statement yet.

This is not the first submarine cable fault affecting Pakistan internet. In January 2024, a cut in the AAE-1 (Asia-Africa-Europe-1) undersea cable slowed down services nationwide. PTCL later confirmed full restoration after repairs.

Frequent damage to submarine cables continues to raise concerns about the reliability of Pakistan’s internet infrastructure.
